High blood pressure – the silent risk factor

Many people in Ettelbruck and the surrounding area are unsure when a visit to a cardiologist is advisable. Generally speaking, in the case of acute symptoms such as severe chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden loss of consciousness, every minute counts – call emergency services immediately at 112. Even though our doctors also work at the Centre Hospitalier du Nord (CHDN), this does not replace the direct contact via the emergency number in an acute emergency.

Outside of acute emergencies, the following signs indicate that an appointment is necessary:

  • Recurring chest pain or tightness

  • Unexplained shortness of breath during exertion

  • Rapid heartbeat or irregular pulse (possible sign of heart rhythm disorders, e.g. atrial fibrillation)

  • Dizziness or brief losses of consciousness (see also: syncope and dizziness)

  • Swollen legs or ankles (possible sign of heart failure)

  • A family history of heart disease

Even without acute symptoms, a preventive check-up can be beneficial, for example, in cases of known high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, diabetes, or smoking. Since many risk factors cause no symptoms for years, early screening is particularly worthwhile.

In Luxembourg, you do not need a referral from your general practitioner to make an appointment directly with a cardiologist – the basic cardiological diagnostics are also usually partially reimbursed by the CNS.

At LuxHeart in Ettelbruck, four experienced cardiologists are available to you. You can specify a particular doctor when booking an appointment or simply attend the next available appointment.
